Retiling Questions??

Hi I have several questions about retiling a bathroom. I hope you guys can help

My parents bathroom is in rather bad condition. I was thinking of retiling it for them. I was just wondering how much work would be involved. Would it be better to hire a professional? Since the old tiles are loose and some have fallen off I can't tile over them. This is a picture of the worst area. If you need a better quality picture let me know.

What's behind the tile? Hard to tell from your picture

This looks like it might be a problem job

Not sure, It feels like concrete. The building was was built about 60+ years ago. So I don't think they used a backer board.

It a rough hard substance. How do I tell what it is?

In that small are I couldn't see the studs either.
