Backerboard on to steel studs

Hi,
I've just removed tile and sheetrock from a bath surround. There are metal studs 24" on center on the sides, regular studs on the back wall. I cut away only 30" of sheet rock on the sides.

In order to secure the backerboard I'll need to either cut away the sheetrock to the next steel stud or add a stud. I have to add a couple of studs anyway as it is recommended that the backerboard be secured at a maximum of every 16".

Is there an easy way to add a steel stud? I did not cut away the sheet rock all the way to the ceiling so I'm wondering if a can add cross bracing and secure a stud to that.

Also should I use self tapping screws to secure the backerboard to the steel studs?

Thanks for any advice

Doug

As with any bath remodel, complete removal of sheetrock in the area will make is so much easier to do what you need to do, like your stud work. After all it is only a small amount of sheetrock, and I doubt you will be able to get any studs to fit the area with the sheetrock in the way.

Thanks Chandler. Removed the rest of the sheetrock today and bought a couple of steel studs. Shouldn't be too hard to fashion a couple of cross braces and add studs above the tub.

Anyone have any tips on adhering a vapor barrier to steel studs?

Thanks,
Doug

Gorilla snot is good (3M adhesive sprayed on the face of the studs). Don't forget to frame in for your shower controls and overhead sprayer. They will need the support.
