Hanging wall cabinets

Hi everybody! Just a newbie here. Can I get some advice on how to hang wall & base cabinets? I'm planning to change the cabinets on my kitchen. I know that you need to attach it to a stud. But how will you know that you're going to hit the stud when you drill the screws on the cabinets? I've been doing a lot of research on tv & internet about it but can't find anything. Please help!!! Thanks in advance!!!

you use a studfinder to locate the studs prior to your installation, making marks on the wall near the top of the cabinet so you can see where the studs are. Then use those marks to center your cabinet installation screws on the studs.

A great way to alleviate this "where's the stud" problem is to remove a horizontal stretch of wall to expose the studs and then to mount a board in the wall where you removed the wall.

Here's another option - a hangar board. Note the notch. A similar piece of wood on the cabinet (notched opposite) holds the weight of the cabinet.

Cleats work, but they still leave that 3/4' gap that has to be tended to. We do it on commercial applications. Makes it zip right along, and level, too.
