Possible mold and peeling in bathroom ceiling

Hello,

We bought a house about 7 months ago and have noticed a problem getting worse in our bathroom. There is an area above the shower head on the ceiling where paint is peeling in a circular pattern and there is a yellowish spot in the center - possibly mold.

Around that whole area there is a square outline which indicates work has been done on this area before. Could this be the result of previous shoddy work? What's with the circular pattern?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forums!

That looks like mold but I wouldn't get overly concerned unless someone in the house has respiratory problems. I'd just clean it up using care not to scatter it all over. The edges of the circle look like where this issue was addressed in the past and as you said - the workmanship was kind of shoddy.

Do you know what kind of paint is on the walls/ceiling? A bath rm with a shower needs to be painted with latex enamel to help repel the moisture. Flat latex paint tends to suck up the moisture. Is there an exhaust fan in the room? if so, is it used after showers? A kitchen and bath paint would be better than regular latex enamel as it has extra mildewcide and is formulated for the harsher environment of the bath w/shower. Since you already are having issues from moisture, I'd highly recommend using a K&B paint!
