New shower is leaking through the grout

We recently gutted our bathroom down to the wall studs and remodeled it. After about 2 months we noticed that the wall in the other room to the shower was wet and the shower is leaking through the grout. We sealed the grout and still the shower is seeping into the wall of the other bathroom. We installed plastic on the back of the wall when we installed it and the rubber in the the shower pan. The grout line is 1/8 and we used sanded grout. Was this the wrong grout and what should we do. We need to fix this before we start on the other bathroom.

Thanks for any help.

Post some pictures.
Did you water proof the tile board on the face of it before tiling? Tile board is not water proof.
Sanded should not have been usedon a gap that small, but I doubt that's why it's leaking.

No we did not. We used the cement board and only put the plastic on the outside of the wall. Do we need to take it out or can we just re grout the wall in the shower?

Thank you

How high did you take the pan liner up the walls? Did you install blocks inbetween the studs to support the pan liner? Does the plastic overlap the pan liner near the base of the wall? Did you tape and mud the seams and corners on the cement backer board? You will have to take the sanded grout out eventually, but want to scrutinize your tile work first to see if the problem exists elsewhere. Did you take any pictures during the remodel that you can share with us?

grout and tiles are not designed to waterproof your shower. You need waterproofing under it. Options are hot mop, plastic liner, liquid membrane, sheet membrane, etc. The FloorElf has a good book on the various options.

if you didn't put any, water will get thru even if your grout has no cracks.
