replacing ceramic tiles

We've removed ceramic backsplash tiles and the top primed layer of the drywall has been pealed away to the grey papery layer. Is there some way to treat the papery surface of the drywall to seal it or do we have to replace it before applying new tiles?

Remove the drywall and install cement backer board. Then you can tile.

You can install 1/2" cement board and use bull nose tile at the ends of the runs or inset 1/4" cement board and end flush with the existing drywall with a schluter strip as a transition.
