Does a basement kitchen require a extractor fan?

Hi,

We recently bought a house with a basement apartment, there's no extractor fan in the kitchen (there is one in the bathroom). We are about to rent the apartment but i worry we need to install a extractor fan. Is this necessary or required? I live in Canada.

thanks

If there is a fossil fuel stove then in my opinion.... yes...... you'd need to install an exhaust fan that vented outdoors.

Necessary.... yes if they're going to cook.
Required...... don't know.

If its a natural gas or propane, you most likely can get away with it. Most people who have a spare stove in the basement don't bother to vent the basement. In most cases there is enough air exchange. However, you should have a smoke AND co2 alarm. This is a must. If it's elctric range then no problem.

Now if you tend to burn most of your cooking, then yea I would want a vent fan.

Thanks Guys,

The stove is one of those old electric hot plate ones. the basement apartment will be rented. I'm not concerned about smoke although i'll have the necessary co2/fire detectors. I'm more worried about consistent humid air being added to the basement.

Anyway, it sounds like i need to get it done. I'm assuming i'll need to hire someone for this as i have a double brick wall which i assume will need to be drilled through to rout the extractor fan. I assume i want to avoid them drilling through my joists?

thanks

Based on the electric type of cooking.... gas fumes from a range/oven won't be an issue so an exhaust fan is not as critical.

You would need to know which direction the beams run in and the duct work would be run parallel to them. You wouldn't want a floor joist drilled out 4+" for an exhaust duct.

Thanks PJ

So i shouldn't be concerned about moisture being added to the basement each time they cook? The kitchen is at the outer wall and the joist run in such a way that you could put the fan straight on the outer wall and not cut any joist.

thanks again
