Waterproofing a custom shower

I am putting in a custom size (3*5) stand up shower. I am looking for information on which is better, Double mudd floor or a custom fiberglass shower. I live in NJ and the code does not approve fiberglass shower and I am wondering Y.
I know the double mudd has a membrane but it just doesn't seem that waterproof near the drain which concerns me.
I use to work for an electrician and we did upscale homes and I have seen the plumber do custom fiberglass showers. To me that seemed more durable. But just would like more info.

The membrane to drain attachment is pretty standard and is quite reliable. I'm not sure what you mean by custom fiberglass? Generally higher end homes have built up tile showers while fiberglass is generally a pre-fab unit more for the average, not upscale, home.

Custom membrane showers have been around for over 50 years. The membranes used to be made out of lead. But the concept is time tested. The shower drain body used for a double slope with shower liner in actually a 3 part system and is a drain within a drain. The base is attached to drain pipe. An initial slope is formed with a cement mud bed, The pan liner is placed in the shower and run 8 to 10 inches up the wall and attached to the studs. The middle section of the drain body is then bolted down with the membrane both caulked and sandwiched between. A third portion then screws down into the drain body and its height is adjusted to the final height of the 2nd mudbed plus tile. If done correctly, it should not leak.

I'm not sure why code does not allow Fiberglass.

Here is an illustrated guide to a custom double sloped shower base installation to help complete your image and provide some peace of mind. How to build a shower - Building a shower pan with pre-sloped mortar bed, liner and curb.

When I mean custom fiberglass, it was like painted on with a roller the entire floor and walls down low, then they just tiled right over it. The fiberglass was the waterproofing membrane of the shower.
