tile over formica for a kitchen backsplash

Hi!
I am looking to die a cosmetic update to my kitchen by upgrading the backsplash from the exisiting formica to a tile backsplash. The formica is in good shape without any obvious joint seperations, bubbling or delaminating so my question is do I need to remove it and install a backer board or can I tile rightover the top of the formica? would the adhesive hold adequatly to formica?

Thanks for any help.

The plastic laminate should be removed. For a back splash you may be able to apply it directly to what's behind but the laminate should go.

What is the best way to remove the laminate from the walls? Mine seems to be glued on pretty tight and I'd be afraid of damaging the sheetrock\gypsum board.
