My wife and I decided to rip out the old shower tile and rehab the entire small bathroom in our 65+ yr old Florida home. had to rework some of the shower plumbing as well (main reason of tile removal). I am running into an issue with the shower drain as I am getting ready to lay a new shower pan. A lot of people are telling me to rip up the concrete and replace the old cast iron drain with new. Need some pointers here as to what to do next. Can I just cut the cast iron drain and add a new fitting? Or should I tear up the terrazzo/concrete and replace below the trap for a full watertight replacement? Let me add that there are some signs of water damage when I pulled up the old lead pan liner at the studs, but doesn't seem that bad and I don't think it had anything to do with the shower drain or maybe it could have?? The research I have done with laying a new pan, consists of having a new pvc shower drain and is pointing me to replace the old cast iron. Any advice or pointers will help!! I there such a thing as a top tracked shower glass enclosure? If so where can I find one? Which manufacturer produces such a thing?
