Repairing granite scratch: I tried and failed. Please help!

Hey guys,

So I had a scratch in my granite countertop and watched a DIY video about repairing the scratch.

Got the necessary tools, I took the hand sanding approach.

Unfortunately after the first round of sanding with with 320 grit ( to get the scratch out) I lifted up after a big effort and now there is a massive black splotch in my countertop and I have no idea why.

Can some please assist?

Kind regards
The inexperienced

Keep in mind that you are not fixing the crack. You are polishing it out. When you are done you will have a low spot where the scratch used to be.

I am sure the video you watched showed you to use a series of grits starting with coarse (small number) to get the scratch out then you proceed through progressively finer grits (larger numbers) to restore the shine. The job probably isn't finished until you get up around 3'000 grit. Make sure you don't get impatient with the intermediate step as you have to polish out the scratches of the proceeding step before moving to a finer grit.
