Welcome to the forums!

Is it feasible to shave the studs? maybe purchase a different tub?

This is one of those cases where you get bit in the rear by not measuring first. First make sure there are no shims or furring strips spacing out the rough opening that could be easily removed. If not then the easiest would be to get a tub that fits the opening. If you want to make the 60" tub you can cut down the studs but you need to be careful and pay attention to how you will do the surround as cutting the studs means your shower walls will be a bit recessed in relation to the other bathroom walls.
