Covering a large hole in slab under shower pan

Hello! Looking for some advice or ideas on how to go about installing a new vinyl tub over a 16"x16" hole where the waste pipe is coming from under the slab. I have had a few ideas, but wanted to see if anyone has experience in this. Some of my thoughts include filling and tamping the hole with sand, laying a vapor barrier, building a framed box in the hole, and actually laying a plywood subfloor where the tub will sit. Another idea I had was to pour more concrete to make the hole smaller, down to a size that the trap can still be accessed, but no need for more support when laying the mortar bed. I wouldn't really know how to "tie" that into the surrounding slab...

I have attached a picture, please don't mind the rotted studs, old waste pipe, and the small crack in the slab, I am working on those while figuring out the next step in this project.

Your initial thought of adding sand and tamping then a vapor barrier is spot on. Do not add concrete to this area. The access to the trap is the purpose of the size of this hole. Once you have your trap installed and before you lay your mortar bed for the rest of the base, add your sand and LIGHTLY tamp. then place a small piece of plastic over the whole tape the edges and lay your mortar bed. Best of luck.

Shane,

That was exactly my thoughts. I knew that I had to have access to the trap, which is why I was confirming my initial plan! Thanks!
