Does a shower niche have to be sloped?

I build a niche for my new tub surround. I just framed it up using 2x4, hardibacker, etc... But then I was watching this video and the guy said the niche shelves need to be sloped. Do I need to rectify this? It's all waterproofed with redgard, I assumed this was a non-issue.

Well yes the shower shelves should be slightly sloped to let soapy water drain away. And if left for any length of time it might get moldy. But if it's too late, not a big deal. Just kind of soak of residue water and let it dry. I wouldn't tare anything apart to correct such a minor problem.

You can just slope the mortar bed, doesn't need much!

I build the niche square with a flat bottom. Then I use a flat trowel and bit of thinset to build up a slope to the bottom of the niche. Then tile normally.

You do that in one step? Or you build the thinset slope, let it dry, and THEN tile?

One step should do it. Using thinset to level tiles between each other is typical. You just need enough to let water drain away. If your good at it, you won't notice any slope and a bar soap won't slide off.
