Converting bathtub into a shower - unknown copper pipe ?

I am removing a cast iron tub from 1950s , and converting the tub area into a shower. We noticed a copper pipe underneath the tub that is capped at one end and runs into the wall at the other end (don’t know what it leads to).

Does anyone know what this pipe is for and can I cut it and reduce it back out of the way??

It's a little difficult to even begin to guess what you have, how about a few pictures to enlighten us to the situation?
