Granite vs Formica installed costs

I am building a new house and for the counter tops want to use granite in the kitchen. I had been planning on using Formica in the pantry and utility room. However, the builder and another installer indicated that the cost of granite (especially when using remnants) was the same as for Formica. We have an estimate of $65 per sq ft for the granite remnant.. How do you see this comparing with Formica?

A lot depends on the granite you choose and whether or not you can actually use remnants. If you can use remnants your mostly paying for the cutting and installation. But, very generally the upper end of the range for laminate is the bottom end of solid materials like granite with a lot of overlap in the middle.

If your contractor says the cost is comparable, I'd go with that. More importantly, if the pantry and/or utility room is reasonably close to the kitchen I would coordinate materials. That is, either use the same granite throughout or switch to laminate for the other rooms but have it coordinate with the kitchen countertops. Don't go with granite for the pantry or utility rooms unless the result makes sense with the kitchen.

It may also help that the granite installer is already there. It's probably easier/cheaper to get the same installer to add another piece or two rather than bringing in a different subcontractor/installer to install a few small pieces of laminate.
