Bathroom re-tiling

We are planning to change the plumbing for our bathtub/shower.
The plumbers will be ripping out the current fittings (6 components) and replace them with new ones (would appreciate any recommendations here, too)
This will obviously damage the tile. We want to replace only the damaged area ourselves with new complementary tiles. Is this realistic? Or will there be too damage and should we hire a pro?

Thank you,
sami

What are the "6 components"? (A 3 handle valve, the shower head and the tub spout only account for 5 holes in the wall.)

How you repair the tile will depend a lot on the configuration of your current valve, and how much, if any, damage there is in the wall behind the valve. Also, how old is the tile and will you be able to match it?
