Shower remodeling

We had a major leak in our master shower this past weekend and all the shower water leaked through the tile and came through the kitchen ceiling. To make a long story short, we have decided to gut the entire shower stall and separate bath and start from scratch. We are doing the demolitioning ourselves this weekend, and cleaning out any mildew on the existing drywall. We spoke with a contractor friend and he said to use concrete floatboard as backing? He said that a tiler can hang this and do it for us. Can we do it ourselves? Cost is such an issue for us and we are quite handy. If we can do it ourselves, do we just hang it like drywall and do we use anything else for the wall? Help

you need to use CBU - or cement backer unit - durock is one brand they have them at home depot. You hang it like drywall with the following exceptions. Need special coated screws - they carry them at home depot - normal screws won't do. you need to get special tape for the joints and use thin set not joint compound. other wise pretty simple except it is alot heavier than drywall. you should use poly behinfd as vabor barrier. check out www.johnbridge.com - the best tile site on the web. they have great references docs on this
