Question shower suround

I am redoing our bathroom and the shower suround that we have now is an off white with green design in a tile patteren (it is not a smooth surface).
Do I have to remove this suround before putting the new one on, or can I put the new one over it???
If I have to remove it is there any way of painting it plain white?

tddtq - I assume you are referring to tileboard as your current tub/shower surround, rather than ceramic tile. Tileboard is a Masonite-like product, often embossed in a tile design and coated with a high gloss finish. If that is what you have, you can install a new surround without having to remove the old tileboard (assuming the clearance is not too tight). My only concern is about the inside corners. If there is a trim piece in this location where the tileboard meets, it may hold off the new surround sections in the corners. It just depends on the type of your new surround. Good luck.
