Also any Ideas for the sweet tooth on the adkins diet?

At least you aren't putting any back. I follow ChangeOne. It is a slow process, but you have to hang in there. I believe that a big part of it is how much you have to lose anyway. I think that the body is reluctant to give up the last few pounds. It is trying to adapt to the new levels and types of food.

For the sweet tooth, I eat something sweet. Dieting is not about being a martyr, in my book. It is about being in control.

I like animal crackers or honey shredded wheat, eaten one at a time. This helps prevent the half gallon of ice cream in a fit of pique.

Hope this helps.

When doing the atkins diet was there a menu that you followed daily/weekly? I don't have time to sit down and determine what all I can and can't eat everyday and am wondering if anyone had an example menu. Thanks!

Hello: canannarama. Welcome to the Do It Yourself Web Site and the Dieting & Weight Loss forum.

My understanding of the weight loss program is eating food in the proper amounts and almost whatever you want. Speaking to peers whom claim to be on the diet plan claim it works well.

However, they also claim it is also strict. But no menu per say. Regular food and much of what you eat at normal meals.

For me dieting works well without any diet plan. I simply eat less, avoid sweets, carbs and fats. Also avoid exercising...LOL!

Read what others say about dieting and weight loss in the topic titled calorie counting. The title is slightly deceiving and misleading based on the information contained within it.

Several other excellent topics can be found in the earlier postings in the forum. Read those topics too. They can be found by going back to the creation date of the forum.

Ok well I am lazy and I was hoping to just have someone hand me a menu and say "here cook this"LOL.

Oh and I am not really new here, it is just that I can't remember how I spelled my old name and when I tried to retrieve my info it said it didn't recognize my email address. So I just made up a new one, hope that was okay! Hazards of getting on a different computer and not remembering my info.

Thanks for the advice though. I think carbs are my problem, pasta is a carb right? We have 4 kids so eating the right stuff isn't always easy and pasta is sort of our "last resort" meal, lasagna, manicotti etc.!

The late Atkins has several books out and most have menus in them he also has a carb counter book. My wife has done this diet with great success but I'm a corb-o-holic and can't do it.

Hello: canannarama

And welcome back with any member name...

To me it seems more difficult to follow any menu, preparing the foods according to the recipes, etc. In my opinion, my method, as explained briefly above, is much simplier and faster.

Simply eat less and avoid the wrong types of foods. Eat nothing in between meals and stop eating all deserts. None. Also eating the last meal of the day early, allowing time for digestion.

Doing that much allows me to eat almost anything and anywhere. No normal food restrictions. I simply avoid many of the foods mentioned and eat far less. No calorie counting either...

Regards & Happy Dieting To All.

Exclamation South Beach Diet !!

I just started the South Beach Diet ! It is somewhat like Atkins - but so much easier to follow and it includes real sweets! Sugar free Fudgesicles! Yeah!

On the prevention.com site is an article that tells you what you can eat in Phase 1 / Phase 2 and Phase 3. You can also do a search on google.com for it. They are the abbreviation versions & you can purchase a book - but you really don't have too.

Unlike Atkins - on Phase 2 you can add back in the fruits and then the breads - etc.

Like I said - I just started - I lost 3.2 lbs in 2 days! I hope it keeps up - I am going to the shore in 2 weeks!

Plateau

No matter what type of diet you are on, everyone plateaus from time to time until ideal weight is reached. Achieving and maintaining ideal weight takes a lifestyle change and commitment to your limit of daily calorie intake and your exercise routine. Many, however, soon return to their old eating habits and regain the weight.

To get past the plateau, you need to dig in a little harder and shake things up a bit. If exercising, add some weights to your routine. Shorten your exercise time a little and go at it a little harder. Some days lenghten the exercise time and go slower. Add an extra day of exercise to your routine every other week.

The level of exercise and calories where you are now has resulted in using up a certain amount of fat stores in your body. Now it has plateaued. To get past this and go for more fat stores check your calorie intake and your exercise routine. With exercise, adding more muscle will burn more calories when not exercising. By extending the time of your cardiovascular workouts, you can also burn more calories. Vary your exercise routine to shake things up.

Diet plateau

I just recently started doing Atkins about 2 months ago. And have hit a plateau. However, I know I have slowly been adding a wee bit too many carbs and that's why I've stopped losing weight. I need to ease back on them again. I discovered at my local Wal-Mart a great selection of sugar free (made with Splenda) candies -- right there in the regular candy aisle. I think that has been part of my downfall.

However, I strongly recommend Atkin's New Diet Revolution book. But you really need to read all of it. He talks about having setbacks and sometimes cheating. But he tells you how to handle it.

If you're really stuck -- go back to the Induction stage for a couple of weeks and kick start your body into losing weight again. Be strict with yourself for 2 weeks; you did it before, you can do it again!

And yes, exercise is crucial. You have to keep that up. Whatever it is you like doing; walking, running, gardening, etc.

But keep reading and re-reading Atkin's book. It helps to reinforce some bad habits we fall back into. I really believe you will extend your life and good health by using food the way he and other doctors and scientists have proven works best.

Oh, don't forget the Atkins website: Atkins.com as it's full of recipes, low carb foodstuffs to buy, stories from others who have lost weight and a bunch of other helpful information.

Re: South Beach Diet !!

I too am going to be starting the South Beach Diet. I have read the book and it sounds like it won't be as hard to follow as some other diets. I like the fact that it is heart healthy and for someone with type2 diabetes it is right up my alley! I just had a cardiolite treadmill test and I am also on meds for diabetes. I like the fact that this diet does'nt limit your portions, just eat until you feel comfortable and don't stuff yourself!
I love my breads and pastas but I think I can cut down on them if I can loose the belly fat that is suspose to be bad for your heart.
Anyone else out there had any sucess with the South Beach Diet??

Smile Atkins Plateau

Hi,

I'm having the same plateau problem, so I'll watch for more responses you might get on that. As far as a sweet tooth - I have a huge sweet tooth. If you go to the candy isle look for the packs that state sugar free. Hershey's, York Peppermint and Reese's has some great stuff (just don't overdo it) because of the type of suger supplement they use (without getting graphic) there could be repercussions (read the package).

Good luck,

I'll add my voice to those that have hit a plateau. I started a modified Atkins a couple of days after News Years and full Atkins a month or so later. I have stuck to it pretty well, I think and have lost @53 lbs. For years I did the low fat/high complex carbohydrate diet but always eventually gained it back.

I think what I might be doing is eating too much fat in my daily diet. Probably too much mayonnaise Oh well, I'll work on reducing that next week...

I've been doing Atkins for quite awhile and lost just short of 50 pounds so far. Still have another 30 to go....

www.lowcarber.org -- check it out! Amazing support, suggestions, tips, etc. AND it uses the same format as THIS forum so you'll already know how to move around

Good luck with whatever plan you follow. The important thing is to choose a plan that you feel you can follow for LIFE - not just until you drop the weight.

Lastly, if you're a sugar-junky (aka have a major sweet tooth), that's reason enough to check out low-carbing. Sugar is addictive -- if you can't live without it, then you're addicted and need to break that addiction by staying away from it
