Does walking help you lose much weight?

Does walking help you lose much weight?
I am 6'5" and 270 lbs. I have been walking a minimum of 3.3 miles a day 5 or 6 days a week. Would my gut shrink at all from that? I am asking this because I have about a 37" waist and would like to be back down to a 33" or 34" waist. What a mistake it was to quit smoking for 6 months!!

Do you swing your arms and take exagerated steps? This is the only way that you will get any benefits other than the cardio while walking.
Our bodies get use to routines. Just because I chase a child around the house doesn't mean that I am increasing my health benefits, but only maintining my health at that point.
Speeding up your walk will benefit the cardio, but adding movements such as arm swing and extended strides will work other muscles that aren't normally worked during a normal walk.
If you don't care to exaggerate movements while walking then you might want to consider dancing around the house for 15 to 20 minutes. Be creative (I call it doing the stupid dance) in your movements - extending and working different areas of the body. I've been gaining some needed weight but to keep it where I would prefer it to be I dance while the kids are at school and the hubby is at work. It would embarrass me to do it in front of them LOL. I'm not much on doing situps or walking - other than just walking from point a to point b.

Exercise can help with losing weight. Reducing the type and amount of food eaten can help, too. Together, exercise and food management can help you reach your desired weight goal.
Keeping on the road to managing food intake and keeping active can bring your weight down slowly, so that you are less prone to rebound after a sudden loss of weight.
Some diet plans are rewarding by producing large losses early on. But you did not gain the weight quickly. It is impractical to expect to lose it quickly. The only successful diet plan is one that takes off the weight and keeps it off. I suspect there are many who have lost a lot of weight, only to regain it in short order.
Managing food intake and exercising are keys to changing your lifestyle to one that encourages maintaining the new weight and fitness.
Keep on walking. The best exercise is the one that you will do.

Walking
To get more out of the walking, you will have to put more into it. To lose your belly will take overall weight loss. Despite claims to the contrary, spot reducing does take overall weight loss. Check with your physician to make sure there are no underlying health problems and discuss your diet and exercise. Keep up the walking program and watch your calories.

I walk quickly (the 1.67 miles each way in about 25 minutes) with a backpack on and various terrain (up and down hills). I am eating less than I used to as well.

If my understanding and prior experiences with walking, as an exercise & part of a weight lose plan, nothing much begins to happen to start a high rate of calorie burning for the first 20 minutes.
As I understand that to mean, it takes about 20 minutes for the bodies metabolism to begin to heat up & begin to function as a means of burning energy from accumulated fat, etc.
Walking does work wonders for the heart, cardiovascular system and other body muscles, etc. But until the body warms up and the metabolism begins to convert fat into energy to burn that stored fat, it takes about 20 minutes.
By that time the feet hurt, your lost, tired, thirsty, looking for a bathroom and really hungry...
WOW! Look right there...my favorite fast food place.....
And in my case....the rest is of the story is "Down Hill."
Signature Question:
"Is the new American dream being deep in debt and in a job you hate?"

The answer, for far too many, is yes...& sadly so....

You are doing the two things needed to reduce your size. Exercising and reducing intake. As was said above there is no such thing as spot reduction without overall weight loss. One thing I have found to help lose flab is to reduce your sugar intake, not that I support chemical sweeteners either, cutting sugar is how the youngsters get their "six pack" abs.

a few random thoughts:
instead of "dieting" try a change in eating style. i lsot 10 pounds in 2 weeks on hte south beach diet (i followed it to a t) and after the two weeks i just eat a lot better so i maintaind the weight loss for 3 months now...... for me the continued eating style is what makes me feel better.
any walk is good if you enjoy it. even if you only burn 50 calories or whatever, just getting out and walking and making yourself FEEL BETTER will go a long way. i am not a touchy feely kind of guy but good mental health will encourage you to continue exercise and eat better.
tea made a great point - i have simply cut (not eliminated) sugar and carbs... after a couple weeks it is very easy to do!!

I could be walking in a t-shirt when it is 30 degrees out. After 5 minutes, my back starts turning into a river of sweat. Does this mean my heart rate is up at this point?

Good question. And should be easy to determine.
Check your heart rate prior to the walking. Several methods to do so and I am not including any here because there are several.
Suffice it to say, checking the heart rate prior to excercise may be a good idea. Doing so can establish a base mark (baseline) from which to work from, as well as a goal to obtain.
Walking 5 minutes in any temp does not accomplish much as noted prior. However, noting the increase in heart rate may provide some insight as to any progress made, if heart rate is one of the objectives.
Rasing the heart rate for a set time period during work outs and or exercise sessions, is one of the goals often suggested by those in the health and fitness industry.
As it pertains to your question, 5 minutes in 30 degrees needs to be determined. Check the heart rate when you reach that "River Of Sweat"...
I am on the other side of the river I created already.
Look! Right Over There!
A fast food burger joint....YUM YUM....LOL!...

Try drinking green tea with lemon or a little honey....NO SUGAR!!!!
I used to get up every morning and drink a big mug of coffee with lots of sugar, now I get up and drink either water, hot green tea, or Crystal light.
Just by cutting the sugar out, is a big help toward reaching your goal.
GOOD LUCK!

Okay, I am a 5' 10" female, and I weigh 245. I have tried every fad diet out there. They do not work. So, I am doing things my way. Calorie input < Calorie output. I restrict my diet to less than 1100 calories a day, and I walk 8 miles in 2hrs. 40 min. I also do windsor pilates 3 times a week. I have lost about 20 lbs since I started, but have not lost a single inch.
I know something is happening because of the weight loss, but what about the inches. Any help is muchly appreciated.

Congratulations on your diet and exercise program. The inches will come down as you continue your program. Adding some exercises to tone the areas where you want to lose inches will be helpful. Do not despair because you will eventually lose inches.
