door doesn't fit anymore

I have a bathroom down stairs, just got down painting all the trim, and the door, rehung it and now it sticks on the top, and the door knob lock bolt does not fit in the plate, what gives?

Check for plumb

Put a level against the jambs and the top to check for plumb and level. If the opening is square, then your door is out of plumb. This probably happened when you re-hung the door.

To check for plumb on a door, you can use a level, I like using a plumb bob. You'll need a small wedge, like a door stop, a stick, the size of a popcicle stick, some string the length of the height of the door and a small weight.

Tack or tape the stick to the top of the door on the latch side, extending about 2 inches. Attach the string to the stick and the small weight to the other end and let hang just above the floor. When the string stops moving, it is plumb. Measure the distance from the string to the door at different places. If the distances are equal, then the door is plumb. If it is not, then take your wedge and put it under the door to hold in place.

Since the door is grabbing on the top, it is more than likely the top hinge that is causing the problem. Loosen the screws on the top hinge on the jamb. Then adjust the wedge under the door till the distances between the string and latch side of the door are equal. Once you get the door plumb, estimate the distance between the hinge and jamb and install pieces of cardboard, that will take up that distance. When you put the screws back, remove the wedge and check for plumb again.

You may have to try this more than once to get it right.

Cool

You can adjust the hang of this door a bit by shimming behind the top hinge with something like an old utility knife blade or two, or a popsicle stick.
Just loosen the hinge plate on the door frame and slide something behind it until it hangs right when the hinge plate is tightened back down.
See if that doesn't do the trick.
Good luck!
Mike
