double hung windows won't stay open
I have a number of double hung windows that will not stay open. When I open the window they just slide back down. Is there anything I can do to fix this problem?

If you've got plastic tracks in the sides, there are springs in behind them.....To get them out is real work......you either have to take the inside stops or the outside stops ( the outside runs under the moulding outside, so that would have to come off too), then take both sashes and tracks out together. Once you do that, you can see the springs on the back side....they may be broken or damaged or just the clip or attachment point that hooks them to the sash may be fouled......
In any case, all of the above is for information....the REAL problem is you probably can't get replacement parts for any of it.....Manufacturers of most wood windows just ordered mass amount of stuff like that, and you'd have a time finding where they bought it....or IF the orginal maker is still in biz....or the window maker for that matter.....
Your solution is the "stick holding up the sash".....
....seen a LOT of them since I'm in the replacement biz ...ahahahahaha
or replace the windows. They make sash/track packages if you have fairly standard wood windows ( like made after the late 50's or so) and want to go that route.....or you can go vinyl replacements, which is what they were designed for.......

If they are tracks with springs behind them they are called "Jambliners". You will need a bit of information before you order them. Call 800.352.0800 (Strybuc Industries) they will give you the name of the nearest dealer that sells this product.
