Question

I have a bedroom door that won't stay open. It closes all by itself. What adjustments should I make so that it will stay open?

thanks

Hi cd
well if your bedroom door is closing all by it's self then it is because it has not been fitted level, this is normally due to the subframe, ie the part of the frame that the hinges are set into (the timber lining) not being level, so two remedies,
1) remove the door and reset the subframe, to do this you would have to remove the architrave from both sides of the lining then the lining needs to be moved at the bottom to make the uprights level, then replace the architrave and rehang the door..
2)undo and move either the top hinge or the btm hinge either in or out so that what ever position you open the door to it will remain there, again use a spirit level to see which hinge needs adjustment, but remember to check that the door opens and closes each time you move the hinge as wooden doors only have so much room to play with, also only use one screw in each hinge untill you are satisfied with the way the door hangs, then put in the rest, remember that a slight breeze will also close a door if the hinges are easy to move, so when doing adjustments keep windows and other doors closed if possible, also if closing the door to the nearly closed position and it does not want to close fully with out you pushing on it, and the hinges move slightly, then this means that the door is what is called hinge bound, to over come this put a thin piece of cardboard behind the flap of the hinges to move them out slightly this normally works.
I hope that this helps you a little.Handyman

simmilar problem

My bedroom door also closes. The problem began when I changed the hinges - prior to that the door was fine. It seems to be almost exactly level but not quite. Is the fix the same - experiment to see which hinge should be moved out/in?

Just put a small paper between the hinge and the wood frame where you screw. It takes care of it.
PS: I'm not a handyman but a guy at homedeopt told me and it worked like a charm

tried it

I tried the suggestion of sethuvs = for either hinge. It didn't work. Why would the new hinges change thins like that? Any other suggestions.

I bend the hinge pin by laying it on a hard surface (concrete floor, anvil, etc.) and hit it in the middle with a hammer. This just causes a slight bend in the pin which will create more friction in the hinge keeping the door from opening/closing when you want it to remain in position. This doesn't affect the positioning of the door in the opening.

I'd be willing to bet that if you put a level on the hinged part of the door frame, it's a little slanted. You could unscrew either the top or bottom hinge, put a thin piece of wood spacer behind it, and make it straight.
