I am installing retro-fot windows but want to get the maximum window exposure. Has anyone tried cutting out the aluminum frame at the sill level (and perimeter surfaces)?

If so, do you use a sawzall? or ?

During my years in construction, this is one thing I have never done, nor will I ever do, nor will I tell anyone how to do it. Big Trouble.

I have to agree with Jack. For the extra 1/2" or so of glass you may gain at each window, it's just not worth the risk of the water damage you will probably end up with.

Thanks everyone - I'm going to take your advice and lose the 1/4"-1/2" around window. It makes sense for water ingress potential to leave the aluminum 'perimter shell in place. Thanks!
