Question

I am in the planing stages of a kitchen remodel. In the process I will have to take out a load bearing wall which because of the length of the span will require support posts. I will also be installing and relocating new window openings. I have been looking on the web for 3 days now for information or plans on how-to-do the rough framing around the posts for mission style arches. Anyone have any good tips or links?

Good tips:

Make sure you have enough money in the bank to finish the project -- they always end up costing twice what you expect!

Get a building permit.

You probably will not find a site that will help you, or even a book. This type of carpentry is passed down over the generations from carpenter to apprentice. I could do it, but to tell you how to do it would be impossible. My best advice, is to find your self an old carpenter (finish), and pick their brain, or maybe even have them help. This is not an easy job, and the little things are going to be expensive. I call them the putsy stuff. Make sure you get a permit. That load bearing wall can come back to haunt you really quick. usually in the middle of the night. Good Luck
