I have a Stanley Steel door that is rusting out at the bottom. In fact the outside "skin" has begun to pull away at the bottom. I am thinking of wiring brushing the rust off as best I can then using sheet metal screws to fasten down the skin as best I can until i can replacew the door. Any sugesstions on primer and paint? Any other ideas on how I can save a otherwise perfectly functional door?

Sounds like the door is beyond what a coat of paint will cure. New pre-hung metal doors start at about $100. Why fight it?

After removing rust, if you have deep irregular areas you could fill in with Bondo or a similar filler used on car bodies, etc.
"Hammerite" is a great paint for metal which gives a hammered look. I used it on Stanley
metal doors on my new home, to match balcony rails and stairway rails. It's about $15 for a small can, half a can will do 2 good coats on a door. For best results use a low nap roller. It's also available in spray cans.
Good luck!

gunk on door

I have two Stanley doors,the top half is glass.I bought them back in 1994.The two doors are still gray in color.Something that they used to seal the frame around the glass is ozing from it and going down over the door.It looks like a sticky subance.

Just wonder if anyone has had this problem.How do you get this stuff off.My wife used a knife scraper,but it looks like it's coming back

thanks John Bauman

It is the sealant that they set the glass in. Often you have to remove the excess prior to painting a new door. Scraping it off with a putty knife is usually the best method. Any leftover residue can scrubbed off with paint thinner.

gunk on doors

: Got to reply to this suff that is on the Stanley doors.Even if you try to wipe it off,it still comes back.Not sure what the stuff is.The plastic that is the frame. is at the point that if you try to take it off,you would break it.

I used a cleaner,but is only a temporary fix.It will come back.As I said,have had the door since 94

Thanks John Bauman York ,Pa::
