Question

My exterior door jam has rotted and need replacement. What is the correct thickness that the door jam should be? I have been told anywhere between one-half to five-eights.

If you are going to use the existing door, replace the jamb with one that is the same thickness as the orginal jamb. Half inch or 5/8" probably won't make any difference, if that is about what you have now. But if you were to try replacing that with a 1-1/4" thick jamb, you could run into problems. A better solution might be to simply install a prehung door. It will cost more than just replacing the jamb, but it is so much faster and easier... The look of a new door just may be worth it.
