I have an 8' sliding glass door in my basement. The bottom of the stationary panel has rotted all the way to the glass. I have temporarily filled it with concrete. The track also has some rot so I need to replace the entire unit. I have a couple of questions.

- Is the weight of one of these panels too heavy for 1 person to handle?

- My wife would like to enclose 2' of the opening and install a 6' french door. What would be the best way to do this since I am dealing with a cinder block wall and concrete floor?

- From an efficiency point of view, would the french doors be better or should I stick with the 8' slider?

Sal, since you are concerned about the weight of the pane, make sure you have an able bodied helper there when you remove it.

Retrofitting in an 8' (or 6') slider that has low-e glass would be more efficient than a set of french doors or a slider with clear glass. The efficiency is gained by the glass and the quality of the frame. But if you are unsure how to do it so that you can guarantee that it won't leak, I would suggest hiring it done. It is cheaper to have it done right the first time than it is to have to go back and redo it again!
