Trimming Windows

Is it reasonable to trim a window with 1x material? If not, what do you use. I have installed new windows in new construction. I do not want to trim out the inside of the windows with drywall as I have seen lots of moisture problems through the year using this. I would rather use a dimension lumber. Thanks.

No reason you can't. The casing and sill in EVERY window in my house started out as a piece of 1X6 oak, except for the sills in the 2 bay windows. Those came from 3/4" oak plywood.

Refinishing a wood door...Worth it ?

Hi Everyone ! Im new here, and heard lots of great things about this site, so I look forward to learning lots of good tips from all the handy guys and gals out there ! Here is my issue: We bought our home 2 years ago. It is a high ranch, about 35 years old. WE have a pretty wooden door in the front. From all the winters, it has gotten very rotted, the wood is falling off into splinterry (made up a word ! LOL) looking pieces, and it seems to be fading away, especially at the bottom. Is it worth refinishing this door? It is one of those doorswith the 2 side windows and the window above the door to match. It is probably a $2,000 door, minumum, but it sure doesnt look like it anymore ! :( Any advice would be greatly appreciated ! Thanks ! annaRead More

I just bought a 32 yr old home - found out the front exterior door is hollow - not hung right... lots of drafts coming in... have already weather stripped it to no avail. If I replace it with a steel door will that help and can I do it myself? ( with help of course) ThanksRead More
