door stiker problem

I have a bedroom door that won't latch all the way when closed.
The door closes good but if you push lightly against the door instead of the knob, the door will open.
I know it's in the striker plate, but what needs to be done to fix this problem. thanks

Look to see it the striker plate opening is aligned with the striker so that it drops in fully. If not, move the striker plate so that it does.

Sometimes the mortise in the frame for the hole is not cleared out all the way and the latch could be hitting that, keeping it from engaging the strike all the way.

Also check the screws on your hinges, if they are a bit loose they can cause a minute sag that is enough to interfere with latching.

If you only need a small adjustment, and depending on what part of the strike you need it, it is often easier to file a bit off the strike plate than attempt to move the whole thing.
