basement door

I wish to construct a basement exit and want to know what's involved as far a cost and how to brace the wall (f necessary). I have tackled advanced projects in the past; don't want any disasters.

Check with your local building dept. The wall will probably have to be engineered.

Regional cost differences is why you will not get many replies on the cost end. There are significant differences inthe kind of door you want. Walk out, slider walk out, french doors, metal cellar door, etc.

Fixing a window pane

I recently bought an old (1942) house and it has old windows where each pane of glass is separate. One of the windows was missing a single pane when I moved in and I need to replace it. I've measured the window and have the pane of glass, but how do I install it? Do I need to remove some of the wood pieces? It seems that there was something on the outside of the window that is now missing - if I clean it up a bit, I could place the pane of glass into the spot, but it obviously won't stay there. Hello, We are finishing out a home in Panama. It is at 9 degrees off the equator and 3000 ft. It rains every day for 6 months (99%) humidity....and does not rain the other 6 months. So...inside our central airconditioned home, we'll be trying to control temperature (not extremely) and extreme swings in humidity. The home is entirely made out of cinderblock that has been filled and faced with texture and cement. The window openings are around 6" thick. We are going to either buy or build window (aluminum or wood respectively) units built for the exact size of the opening. My question is: ?what is the best or next best for installation? Should they be flush with the outside of the wall? The inside? In the middle of the opening? Also, the pros and cons of double glass in the third world...is it worth it? ThanksRead More
