Question Building Doors

I'M GENERALLING MY OWN SOUTHWESTERN/ADOBE-STYLE HOME IN SOUTHERN NEVADA. I HAVE TIME AND WOULD LIKE TO BUILD MY OWN UNIQUE DOORS, BOTH INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR.
I HAVE LOOKED EVERYWHERE, BUT CAN FIND NOTHING THAT WILL GIVE ME SOME "HOW TO" HELP.
DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS? BOOKS, PLANS, SITES, ETC?
THANKS,
LARRY P

Fine Woodworking from Taunton Press might help you out. Bring money to build doors.

building doors

CHRIS: THANKS FOR THE REPLY. I DON'T EXPECT MY DOORS TO BE INEXPENSIVE, BUT FIGURE I CAN SAVE SOME MONEY SINCE I WANT TO BUILD HIGH END DOORS. I WOULD LIKE TO CARVE SOME OF THEM AND DECORATE SOME OF THEM WITH WILLOWS IN AN INDIAN FASHION. THAT'S WHERE YOU USE WILLOWS IN A CHEVRON DESIGN ON THE INSET PANEL.
ARE YOU SUGGESTING I MIGHT BE ABLE TO BUY SOLID DOORS AND THEN AUGMENT THEM THE WAY I WANT AND GET THE JOB DONE CHEAPER.
THAT WOULD APPEAL TO ME, ALSO.
THANKS AGAIN.

Larry,

Turn off your caps lock key......makes the post easier to read.

As to building doors, this is a fairly advanced woodworking skill IF you want something that looks like high end doors. How much tooling do you have, and how much skill ?

Buying slab doors IF you can find them in the type you want and carving your design would save many hours of learning and a huge investment in machines.

Thanks for your advice. I think I will try to find some solid "blanks" that I can work with. If you know the names of any door manufacturers, let me know. Appreciate your help.

Larry,

If you'll go to the millwork desks of lumber places like Lowes or HomeDepot, or whatever local lumber yards you have there, they can order about anything you want, but they generally don't stock it. Get 'em to get out the catalogs.

I get slab doors with red oak veneer for my house projects, and then hang them in jambs I make and with casing I make.....I just can't build the door as cheap as I can buy it, so I don't bother. I pay about $40 for a 2/6 x 6/8 hollow core door with red oak veneer if that gives you any idea.

The expensive part of building doors is the tools. You might be better off in having the local door shop make special orders for you if you are not going to make many doors.

If you decide to spend the money and time to learn to build doors and want to swap war stories about building custom doors, just holler.

Larry,

What you can do to make beautiful rustic doors is to take raised panel solid wood doors and sand blast them. You can glue pieces of old tire tube or thin metal that you design onto surface to leave smooth locations. You will need to clean and sand any glue off. I saw a guys broshures that would do this to an $85 raised panel door and white wash them a pastel turquoise color and sell them for $450.
