Decision time - help with the following needed!

I will get 8 double hungs (88 - 94 UI) and a casement-pic-casement.

Quoted...

Simonton 9800 w/ "free" upgrade to triple pane and krypton gas (going special) - $6000.

Republic classic II w/ silver oxide coating and "free" upgrade to tuf glass (going special on tuf glass) - $5000.

Great Lakes Ply Gem w/ the HR+plus 4.2 - $5000.

Lang w/ low-e and argon gas - $3500.

Crystal w/ low-e only - $3000.

Certainly I know Crystal and Lang "may" be lower quality. Best value anyone, which one would you choose?

The choice is totally yours but I doubt the small increase of efficiency is going to save you $2-3000 in your life time. If you consider putting the money in a bank account at almost any percent of return would be better.

Thanks, I get what you are saying about the efficiencies but it is only one part of it. I was hoping someone who owns one of those listed would have comments on the overall construction, durability, and smooth/ease operation of the units.

Slider won't lift & tilt?

I know you folks may be somewhat tired of discussing sliding doors, but all I found via a search as to removal was "lift and tilt" and either I'm missing something, or it doesn't appear that will work on the 25-30+ yr-old door in my fixer-upper; So, before I break anything, if you could assure me of what I am doing, I certainly would appreciate it. I don't see a brand name, but it is heavy and I couldn't really budge it much by simply lifting (though, some of it could be caused by the decades of crud which is caked by the rollers). I did however, stick a big screwdriver under the edges and using that as a lever, I can get it to go up, but it doesn't get high enough to clear the track. At either end, down by the rollers there are what, probably should be called a screw and a bolt, both with phillips heads. The screws are recessed in a hole and are obviously screwed into the roller assembly and the "bolt" is about an inch or so higher with it's large, rounded head completely covering whatever it is screwed into.... Any hints about getting this thing out and back-in after I have cleaned or replaced the rollers would be appreciated. I am going to be replacing the windows in my home (which is in Wisconsin). Any suggestions on certain manufacturers? Wood or vinyl? and type of glass? also, is it very hard to install windows yourself, or is it best to leave it to professionals?Read More
