right or left hand door

Pretty basic question but somehow I keep forgetting. How do you determine if a door is left hand or right hand? Is the determination made if the door opens away from you or towards you? I can never remember which is which!

The rule of thumb is to stand with your back on the hinge side of the door. If the door opens on your left side it's a left hand door, right hand door is just th opposite

exterior door RO?

My ? is in regards to having the correct RO available for the new Thermatru FG prehung ext door we will be ordering. (36x80) 1. I removed the ext trim to measure the RO. The width seems to be large enough ie: bottom =39" even, across the middle gets larger at 39 1/4", the width at the top is also roughly 39 1/4". My concern is mostly with the vertical #'s i got. Hinge side vert(top 2 bottom)=8115/16 Lock side=81 7/8 Center(top 2 bottom)=81 13/16 ?-Can I remove material from the header (bottom-between jacks)to give more wiggle room? Do I need all 82 1/2" to make door fit nicely? Outside of removing header and ripping, would sanding or rasping be sufficient without compromising the header? I dont have much in the way of header info, the old door is still hanging. I generally would like to try and square everything as best as possible without having to remove jacks/header and reframe-very little experience at it. Thanks in advance. BTW, I live 60 miles from anything so I will be trying to get most of my ?'s asked over the weeks so when the door arrives I can atleast get it fit and secure in case I have to make that dreaded 120 mile trip for nails. Replacement Bifold doors not closing

The old bifold doors to our laundry area fell apart, literally. We purchased new doors, had them stained, and I tried to install them today, but they won't close! It's as if they're 2-3" (total between the two) too long, but the measurements of the doors are identical to the old ones (60" opening, 2 30" doors). I did replace the center stop, but I've kept the other mounting hardware from the old doors (which appears to work with the new ones - everything fits, and when closed there's no excessive gaps). I'm perplexed as to what the problem is or how to fix it. Any suggestions?Read More
