I want to install a small room air conditioner into a vinyl replacement window. I was going to place a 2 by 4 the width of the window one inch back from the window to provide an elevated sill to hold the air conditioner. Then I could use 1 by 2's inside the window to provide a frame for bracing the a/c. It still stresses the window since the a/c cantilevers out. What have you done for this problem?

I have to install an a/c in the room, and all the windows are replacement windows. I could build a platform inside the window using a 2 x 8 inside screwed to the old sill and braced to the floor by 2 x 4's, and then build up a frame for the window. So, I guess with enough work a very strong and stable frame could be built inside the window, and this is what the a/c could attach to. No plaform would be needed outside the window, although this would help. I was hoping someone had done something simple that was safe and worked well.

The majority of the weight of a window a/c unit is hanging on the Outside. The sill of any window will support a window a/c, but the weight pulling toward the outside is a concern.
