Wood replacement windows

I am looking to replace 75 year old windows. I have priced the Pella precision fit at $500 for the window only for about a 3046 size. That is pretty steep, but I do like the fact that the window is in a frame and not a kit.
Is there any way to use an Andersen window and remove the fins and install the window into the opening after removing the sash, parting strips, etc. Or would I end up using alot of trim to cover gaps, etc. and wind up with a hack job?

Depends on what size opening you have and what size Andersen new construction window you have a choice of....IF you can get something close, it would work fine......but the smaller you have to go, obviously the more you'll have to "fill"........so it's sorta up to you as to what you could put up with.....

Consider also just pulling the entire old window....more work, but you'll get a tighter finish job and it will probably look better.

The casing on the interior is flat 6 inch wide with a backband, etc. I'm sure you know the type. The exterior trim is partially covered with vinyl and wrapped with trim coil. I didn't want to deal with the mess, disruption, lead paint, etc. Andersens were installed upstairs with an add-a-level, so I wanted the new downstairs windows to match.

Any idea why Andersen doesn't make a replacement window? Any other reasonably priced wood alternatives out there?

Thanks

I don't know WHY Andersen doesn't go in for custom replacements....they're missing out on a heck of a market in my opinion.....

You might check out Marvin.......they make custom tilt packs.....the jam liners and sashes.....never used them and don't know the price, but about the only alternative I know of....
