Understanding window replacement

I have begun the process of investigating replacement windows. I will not do the construction myself but just determining the best window for the price is quite a bit of effort.
I have read about problems with air leakage.

Two vendors have been to my home; one would measure the opening and order windows to fit. The other would only replace the actual window (leaving all trim on outside and wrap it in aluminum.

Any pros or cons to one method vs. the other? There is about a $1,500 difference in price (measuring is most expensive).

Any advice you can give would be most appreciated.

"Two vendors have been to my home; one would measure the opening and order windows to fit. The other would only replace the actual window (leaving all trim on outside and wrap it in aluminum"

Let me undeerstand a bit better....

You say "one would measure the opening and order to fit"

Did they say they would remove the ENTIRE window ? Sashes, frame, moulding inside and out and all ??? That is a much more labor intensive deal and will cost you more.....IF that's what they are doing ( which I suspect it isn't base on the wording)

Then you say:

" the other would only replace the actual window"

You first need to get straight on the terms here......

The "window" is the WHOLE deal......sashes ( the frame with the glass....there would be an upper and lower in a double hung window), the frame ( consisting of a sill, 2 side jambs and a head jamb), and the outside moulding. The inside moulding ( casing ) normally does NOT come with any window and is added later by the trim carpenter.

Now, I suspect your second quote for "normal" replacement windows.......the replacment comes as a unit with sashes in a new frame, but that sits in the place occupied by the sashes of your current window. In essence, you set a new frame w/sashes inside the old frame of your current window.

This is how most "replacement" windows are done.....

......and I suspect BOTH of your quotes are for the exact same process based on the wording you've supplied.

Now, how many windows do you have, what are the approximate sizes, and what is the total quote you've gotten from each of them ?

Also what features and types of windows are they offering? This may effect the price as well.
