single hung window question
#1

Hello all, im trying to reuse some fairly new aluminum single hung windows.
i was renting and the landlord never would fix the old windows so i bought new and installed.
i purchased my own place and put the old junk back in before i left.
my situation is that im building an addition to a lark brand portable building. the 30x54 windows are too large for the additions wall height.
can a single hung window be installed as a slider? they will fit nicely on their side.
i have a pretty good size eave on the addition so runoff will be minimal.
what problems if any might i have?
thanks as always, john

No, single hungs CANNOT be installed a a horizontal slider. That would put the weep holes on one end, where they would do you no good, and you would have no weep holes in the sill, where you need them.
Also, the hardware that suspends the sash in a single hung keeps it centered in the frame. Installing it horizontally would allow the sash to sink to the bottom (one side), and you'll possibly run into problems with the sash falling out.
Buy a horizontal slider to operate as a horizontal slider.
