New handle set on exterior door

Hi,

i recently had to replace the handle set on our front door. The new installation was able to re-use the previous holes in the door except for one place it seems.

At the bottom of the new new handle, the screw which holds it in place seems too small for the existing hole. It does not catch securely. I tried a larger size screw ( even though it did not match the finish of the door handle ) but it would not fit through the hole in the door handle.

I am thinking my 2 options are to try and open the hole in the handle to allow me to try an larger screw or to try and "fill in" the hole in the door from the original install to give the screw more material to thread into.

Any thoughts or sugguestions ?

Thanks

How large is this hole? You could find a length of dowel that is the same diameter as the hole, glue the dowel into the hole, and then redrill the size you need the next day, after the glue has dried.

Lefty,

The hole is the width and depth of the screw from the old door handle - which seems to make it a tiny bit oversized for the screw used by my new door handle.

Thanks for your idea about the dowel
