Wide windows

I have old single pane windows on my house that I want to replace. I would like to use vinyl windows for replacement. My problem is that my existing windows are very wide. Two 36 in wide side by side. 52 in high. Roughly. My question, would it be better(more energy efficient) if I threw a couple of two by's in the middle of this opening instead of putting these giant windows in?
I have 4 just like it all over the house. Thanks.

A lot depends on the cost of the replacement windows. I think I would find out what's available in 'stock' sizes and go from there.
Custom sizes can get pricey (at least 10% more than the closest 'stock' size) depending on the manufacturer.

You may find it cost effecient to replace one large window with two smaller ones if the new windows and any additional framing will fit into the existing opening. Try to avoid making the opening any bigger since that will require new framing for a larger header.
