remove & repair window putty

I have double-hung rope sash windows with exterior storm windows. I'd like some instruction on removing the windows from the inside so I can replace the putty that's dried up and falling out. Also, some advice on applying the putty would be helpful.

Removal of the sashes from the inside is pretty straight forward. Use a razor knife to cut the paint and carefully remove the pieces of trim that are holding the sashes in place. Once you can tip the sash out, the rope will unhook. Just be carefull not to let the loose end of the rope fall into the counter weight chase.

Reglazing -- DAP 33 comes in tubes with an applicator that will fit a standard caulking gun. Makes the job too quick, neat, and easy.

Personally though, I wouldn't waste my time. I would replace the windows with energy efficient vinyls, rather than putting much effort into old wood windows.

remove & reglaze windows

Thanks for responding to my question.

The DAP 33 suggestion was helpful as I hadn't heard of this product before.

However, the reason I am considering removing the windows is the house was built in 1911 and the last quote I had for replacement vinyl windows was $2000 for three windows (buy two get one free deal) which is way over my budget. I've asked Lowe's to come out and they refused to replace the four upstairs saying they don't do upstairs replacements. I would rather remove from the inside instead of dealing with removing the storm windows.

Man, you are in the wrong place, and dealing with the wrong contractors. Sgl & dbl hung windows are very easy to replace from the inside. We did a BIG job full of them several years back -- mostly 2nd story and higher. All 75 windows cost the owner about $35,000! (OK -- it was a motel, so he had to put us up for 3 days and feed us too, but still ...)
