how to replace a window

I have 9 windows to replace in my home,,current windows are all wood frame and replacing with vinyl, do i need to have a wood strip around my windows or can I (as some friend suggested) pop the windows in with just the new insulation around it,,which is safer????????????? I am also replacing the siding with vinyl.

No problem with just popping the sashes out and leaving the wood frames in place. Order the new windows so that they will fit in the opening of the wood frame without the sashes. Vinyl windows can be ordered 3 ways. As a 'block frame' (no nail fin), as 'new construction', which will have the nail fin that you don't need, or with the exterior trim molded on the frame. If your wood frames will leave a surface to seal the new windows to once the sashes are removed, go with the block frames and install the windows from the inside. Otherwise, order them with the exterior trim molded on and seal between that trim and the wood frame, installing them from the outside.
