Our door knob broke on the front door today and the bolt is stuck. The door knob is completely out of the door, but how do we get the bolt out? My husband tried prying it out with a screwdriver, but it won't budge.

 

He's probably already done this, but have your hubby take the screws out of the deadbolt and remove both the inside and outside parts. Now he is down to just the bolt itself. He might be able to put a screwdriver into the operating part (center of the 2-3/8" hole in the door) and twist, so the bolt will retract. Next step would be to destroy the operating part of the bolt so that he can retract the bolt from the jamb. If all else fails, use a Sawzall to cut the bolt between the edge of the door and the jamb so he can open the door. Regardless, he'll be installing a new deadbolt, so how destructive he has to get doesn't matter!!
