Unhappy Automatic hinge door closer

I am completely frustrated with this stupid device. Is there anybody out there that has successfully installed one of these devices. If so, please walk me through the steps. Thanks.

bdhtexas,

I've installed several different types of door closers. How you adjust them depends on the brand you have.

One -- Lawernce, and I believe Stanley has a similar one -- requires an allen wrench. You insert the allen in the opening at the bottom or top of the hinge, twist it enough to relieve the pressure, and remove a pin in the side of the hinge. Then you twist the allen farther and reinstall the pin in a different hole (there are several of them). Repeat this process until the hinge has enough tension on it to close the door and latch it. That is the most common.

If you have something different, post back, with the brand name, and we'll see what we can find out for you.

I have a Stanley (75-5885 CD7075), but no slot for an allen wrench. The instructions say to spread toothed legs 1/2" apart, slide closer into hinge barrel.

Then, here's where it doesn't work for me >>>> with thumb against right closer leg, rotate hex nut clockwise until legs firmly contact hinge leaves.

When I go to hold the right closer leg while turning the hex nut the legs close up and go back together, I am unable keep them separated. On top of that when I complete my first turn of the nut and remove the wrench from the nut to give it another twist, the spring pops back to the original position it started at. So, I can never get the legs to even come close to the hinge leaves. Thanks once again, Brian.
