Question Sliding door glass replacement - Fixed side

I have a double paned patio door. The outside pane on the fixed side has shattered as a result of rock and weed whacker incident. The window viewing area is 6' high by 27" wide. The window spider- webbed and is now completly shattered. The local glass shop wants $300 to replace it, the glass itself costing $150.00. What is the procedure on fixing this? Is the fixed piece removed from the frame as a slider would be or is there different procedures? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Proceedure

The proceedure for replacing glass in a fixed patio door would be to have the glass company come and replace the glass on site.

This does not require the removal of the fixed door at all, just the damaged glass.

Cool Moving on

I have removed all of the broken glass, the grooved side moldings and have measured for the replacement piece. On a metal surface the the plate glass pressed against there was a black sealent of somekind. The door, we were told, is manufactured by Anderson but can't confirm this. Does anyone know what kind of sealer this is?

You are not going to replace just the one pane of glass -- you are going to replace the entire IG unit -- BOTH panes of glass and the spacer between them.

Call the glass shop and let them do it. The price they quoted you is fair, and they have the truck and equipment to transport the IG unit and deal with removal and installation safely.

More on glass replacement

Lefty, on your comment (I know this is an old issue, but identical to our situation), what is the IG unit? We had been trying to take the fixed door out to no avail, and have just about decided on calling a glass repair tomorrow, but didn't know what you meant by this.

Thanks for any input,

Jim Roe

JimRoe,

An IG unit is the glass of a dbl. pane window or slider. They are assembled in a factory. There is no such thing as just replacing the inside or outside pane of glass -- you replace the entire unit. They are tempered glass and they are standard sizes.

If you couldn't get the stationary panel out, calling a glass shop was smart. They can do in about 10 minutes what you will spend DAYS trying.
