What Size Screen Spline???

How does one determine the CORRECT spline size when replacing screens? In my area three sizes are available. I picked the middle sized one because it matched what came out of the screen. However, it was pretty hard to set the new spline into the groove. I'm using aluminum screens and new frames.

There must be a way to determine the right size. Even the large diameter will press into the groove. Would the small size be adequate to hold the screen???

New splines are difficult to get into the groove - even with the correct tool.

That's why I try to reuse the old spline if possible.

Try a sample by rolling in a small piece of screen and then roll the spline into the groove. It should go in with some resistance. Now try to lift the screen out of the groove and that will tell you if it's going to hold.
