Unhappy Please Help Explain Sizes Available

I reroofed my entire house and added 3 dormers in the process. The dormers look like any others installed on colonial style homes. When I measure the size window I would like to install, I came up with approx 24W x 30H (doesn't have to be exact because I didn't frame the window opening yet). I would also like to add a semi circle window on top of this (yes it will fit because this is where the "V" or slope of the dormer roof begins).

When I visited the local orange home center, the very ignorant sales person said a window of this size is not possible and that it would have to be at least 36' high. Surely there are plenty of double hung windows out there that are not 36' high, right? I understand that the size I want is nearly square, but I don't see why each sash can't be more of a longer rectangle in width. I also checked a couple of websites for sizes and found that most windows do not come in less than 36' high. I just don't get it!

Is there another option for a window this size that would open and generally have the appearance of a double-hung?

Any help in the right direction is greatly appreciated, as it is nearing fall and I want these in before it gets cold! Thanks!!!

while small 24X30 is not uncommon, I've seen smaller (way smaller to ) the person in the store must be new, have patience with him sounds like he is just learning.Since it is a custom size ( even tho they make them ) it may take longer to get.Snoonyb had good suggestions if you didn't want to wait.

Pete112,

Have you checked to make sure you don't have to contend with code egress requirements?

No, I haven't really checked with the codes but I don't anticipate that being much of a problem because it won't be used as a room. Previous to the dormers, there weren't any windows and that wasn't illegal. I really just added the dormers for appearance. So I'm hoping that won't be a problem and if it is, I'll add a larger window in the wall.

Thanks for the help though! Now I know I"m not crazy and they are available. Just seemed impossible for some time. And BTW, the salesperson was not very nice, like he didn't want to be there, not like he was new. But no matter, I guess I'll keep shopping!

Pete112,

Since the house didn't have the dormers before you put them there, I doubt that egress will be a issue (assuming that you didn't eliminate the existing means of egress, which it doesn't sound like you did).

By all means, go shopping. Get out of the big box stores and go to a glass shop. These guys do nothing but windows and glass -- they will HELP you get exactly the look you desire.
