I want to replace 2 windows myself

I have 2 basement windows that i want to replace myself. Please tell me if i am starting right, from inside the house i removed the finish framing around one of the windows and measured the exact height, length and width of the existing window, is this the correct way to measure to order new ones?. Also i live in the cold north are vinyl windows ok.

Windows (and doors) are measured width by height.

"LENGTH??" What length??

Vinyls will do well. Always Low-E glass, and, since you are in a cold climate, a gas fill might be an option.

measure the rough opening ( stud to stud, or brick to brick ect ) and deduct 1/2 inch both ways. windows should fit fine. If you have a sag in the opening measure at the sag.
