Need window replacement help.

I normally do all my own home improvements but I never have replaced a window before. I had Champion out yesterday and they wanted $500 per window (32x38). I really liked their window but that is just too much money per window in my eyes. My question is what are some things I should be looking for when getting a window and installing it myself? Where is a good place to get the windows from? I went to Home Depot and Lowes but thos windows they have on the self just seem soo cheap and low quality.

Thanks for you time.

warranty, warranty, warranty is 1 of the biggest things you want to look at.
Some windows have 5 to 10 years warranty others have lifetime warranties on both glass and window frames. The newer ( Vinyl ) windows look cheap but infact they are Way better than than they use to make them.Things to look for.... Low-E and argon gas filled on the sunny sides of your house, How they lock or latch, ( your preference ) After a while vinyl windows get a little stiff to operate ( due to dirt and dust ) but a little pledge on a rag and wiping all places where vinyl meets vinyl will make it slide smoother than when you first installed them.MY preference is also a window that the sill track is removable and just snaps back in ( so you can clean out the bottom from time to time and keep the weep track and holes from clogging up ) Vinyl windows come in a verity of colors ( not just white ) to complement your house.I would call a glass shop in your area and they could Tell you all the ins and outs and products available, then call the next glass shop and see what products they have to help you decide.

A glass shop will also measure all your windows ( most shops do this for free ) so you know you have the right size. Most will also bring them to your house ( for a small fee ) when they come in.

You can have them put them in or do it yourself. I'm sure if you want to do it yourself they will even tell you how to do it ( I know we do )

I'm in the same boat you are, replacing 3 windows in my dad's house. We have decided to have the windows installed to cut back on any extra costs if something does not go right. Also, having the company you are buying from measure to get the order done helps on any sizing issues. You'll save if anything is the wrong size or is broken in delivery. Sometimes not having to worry about the little things helps, that way you can simply enjoy the outcome. Going with a company with a good track record and current customer feedback is also beneficial. Ask to hear from some customers who recently purchased from them, they may have insight that you never considered. Anywho, that's my 2cents. Have fun!
